Deepika Padukone recently sparked both controversy and conversation around working hours in the Indian film industry. After embracing motherhood and preparing to return to work, she began signing new films. However, when filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga approached her for “Spirit,” she reportedly laid down conditions: an 8-hour workday. Vanga then dropped the idea of casting her, which triggered a wider debate about work timings.

While some argued that new mothers deserve special consideration, others pointed out that filmmaking is not a regular 9-to-5 desk job and that creative industries rarely operate on fixed hours.

In a new interview, Deepika reiterated her stand that even the film industry should strictly follow an 8-hour workday. She added that everyone should prioritise three essentials in life: sleep, physical exercise, and nutritious food.

For a person to stay healthy, these are non-negotiable, she said. Deepika further stated that all organisations, including film production houses, should structure schedules around fixed working hours each day.

Currently, she is working on two big films: Shah Rukh Khan’s “King” and Allu Arjun – Atlee’s untitled film (AA22xA6).
