Coolie: Gold smuggling, vengeance, and an aging mafia don

Superstar Rajinikanth teams up with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for “Coolie,” which is set for a box office showdown with NTR and Hrithik Roshan’s “War 2” on August 14th. Known for his gritty action thrillers like Kaithi, Master, and Vikram, Lokesh has built a reputation for crafting stories within his signature cinematic universe, often centered around the drug trade. However, “Coolie” is said to break away from that familiar template.
In a recent interview, Lokesh revealed that Rajinikanth praised the film, calling it reminiscent of Thalapathy, Mani Ratnam’s iconic classic. Though the makers have kept details under wraps, the basic plot has reportedly leaked online.
Set against the backdrop of gold smuggling, “Coolie” follows an aging mafia don who seeks revenge and attempts to rebuild his crumbling empire. The film promises a stylized, high-stakes narrative with a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes.
It is the story of an ageing gold smuggler who stumbles upon stolen technology hidden inside vintage gold watches. Using it, he sets out to reunite his former mafia crew and reclaim his lost empire. But what begins as a mission of revival soon spirals into something far more dangerous.
The film also features Nagarjuna Akkineni and Aamir Khan. Shruti Haasan plays Rajinikanth’s daughter.
