Several Hindi actresses who began their careers in the Telugu and Tamil film industries later moved to Bollywood and made disparaging remarks about the very industries that gave them their initial break. Over the years, some even accused South Indian filmmakers of not offering strong, substantial roles to women. As a result, the Bollywood media has perpetuated a negative narrative about the South’s treatment of actresses.
However, Genelia D’Souza has firmly countered this notion. In a recent interview, she shut down a journalist’s question suggesting similar bias and confidently stated that her best roles came from South Indian cinema.
“I have gotten the best in Telugu and Tamil. I was launched by director Shankar sir. I also worked with Rajamouli sir. Even today, people remember me as Hasini or Harini,” she said.
Genelia played Harini in her debut Tamil film Boys (2003), and the iconic girl Hasini in Bommarillu (2006), a role that cemented her stardom.
She is currently promoting her upcoming Hindi film “Sitaare Zameen Par,” starring Aamir Khan, which is set to release tomorrow (June 20).
