Neeraja Kona: Sidhu Jonnalagadda believed in my story instantly

Celebrity stylist Neeraja Kona, who has worked with top heroines like Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal, and Nayanthara, is now turning director. Her debut film “Telusu Kada,” starring Sidhu Jonnalagadda in the lead role, is set for release on the 17th of this month. Here are excerpts from her conversation with the media.

From stylist to storyteller, tell us about your journey?

My journey in films began as a costume designer with “Badshah.” Later, I worked on major projects such as Attarintiki Daredi, Yevadu, and Ramayya Vastavayya. In Tamil, I had the chance to work with leading stars like Vijay, Karthi, Suriya, Vikram, and Sivakarthikeyan.

But writing has always been close to my heart. I have loved it since school days and even published a poetry book. Storytelling gives me joy. After designing costumes for nearly a hundred films and spending 12 years in the industry, I felt confident that I could write and direct a film. That experience itself has been my film school.

I first discussed this story with Nithin, and he felt it would suit Sidhu well. When I narrated the script to Sidhu, he listened to it in one go. Later, his manager called to confirm the project. That was one of the most memorable moments in my life.

What kind of story is Telusu Kada?

It is not just a love story. There is emotional complexity and depth. It is a character-driven drama with three strong and honest characters. Each one has an emotional core that audiences can relate to. I do not see it as a film made by a woman. I want it to be seen as a good film made by a good filmmaker.

How involved was Sidhu Jonnalagadda in the script?

Sidhu has a unique perspective on storytelling. His insights added more strength to my writing. Though people expect him to be (DJ) Tillu, his character Varun in this film is completely different. Sidhu totally immersed himself in the role. His look, his body language, everything helped bring Varun to life.

What are Srinidhi Shetty and Raashi Khanna’s roles?

Srinidhi’s character Raaga is quite complex. Her experience in films like KGF and Hit 3 helped her bring a lot of depth to the role. Raashi plays Anjali, a very unique character. She performed wonderfully and brought complete honesty to the part.
