Asha Bhosle’s Telugu Songs: Fewer in number, enchanting melodies

The passing of legendary singer Asha Bhosle has once again brought focus to her vast and versatile musical journey across Indian cinema. While she is predominantly celebrated for her work in Hindi films, her contribution to Telugu music remains memorable and unique.

Asha Bhosle may not have sung extensively in Telugu compared to native playback singers, but every song she rendered carried her signature style, blending elegance with expressive depth. Her voice added a distinct flavor, especially in songs that required sensuality, playfulness, and emotional nuance.

Her first Telugu film was “Paalu Neellu,” while her last Telugu song was for director Krishna Vamsi’s “Chandamama.” Interestingly, she also appeared as herself in “Pavitra Bandham,” performing on stage during a concert sequence.

Music lovers often recall how her Telugu tracks carried the same charm that made her a legend across languages. Even today, these songs are revisited for their freshness and nostalgic value. Though few in number, her Telugu songs remain cherished gems that underline her unmatched versatility and enduring legacy.

Here is a look at some of the Telugu songs she crooned:

Idi Mouna Geetham – Paalu Neellu

This was Asha Bhosle’s first Telugu film, released in 1981. Directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, with music by Satyam, the film starred Jaya Prada. The song became a highlight.

Chinni Krishnudu – Jeevitha Sapta Sagara Geetham

Starring Ramesh Babu and directed by Jandhyala, the song was shot in the USA. Composed by R. D. Burman, Asha Bhosle’s voice, along with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, added beauty to the visuals.

Ashwamedham – O Prema / Seethakalam Premaku

Pavitra Bandham – Isaalakidee

Composed by M. M. Keeravani, this song may not be widely remembered, but Asha Bhosle’s on-screen appearance made it special. The duet featured Venkatesh Daggubati and Soundarya.

Iddaru – Vennela Vennela
In Mani Ratnam’s “Iruvar,” with music by A. R. Rahman, she sang both the Tamil and Telugu versions of this melody, showcasing her adaptability.

Chandamama – Nalo Voohalaku

Her final Telugu song, from “Chandamama,” starred Kajal Aggarwal and was directed by Krishna Vamsi. The song stood out as one of the film’s highlights.

In Telugu, Asha Bhosle collaborated with composers like Satyam, R. D. Burman, Ilaiyaraaja, M. M. Keeravani, and K. M. Radhakrishnan, leaving behind a small yet impactful musical legacy.
