When Will Byers unleashes his abilities at the end of Volume 1, his eyes turn that cold, white glow just like Vecna’s. But there’s a detail that’s just not getting the attention it deserves – this isn’t Will tapping into some hidden psychic power that’s been lying dormant inside him. What we see Will doing with his powers isn’t him becoming a second Eleven. It’s him getting to be a sort of psychic puppet master, threading his awareness right inside Vecna’s hive mind connection and basically pulling the strings from the inside. That’s the difference between owning a superpower and basically renting it from the dark side.
Eleven’s powers were always just hers. She was born with them and they were hardwired into her by Dr. Brenner back in that lab. Her telekinesis is literally inside her, a part of who she is.
Will’s whole situation is just completely different. What started back in season one with him getting yanked into the Upside Down as a terrified little kid basically infected him with something way worse than just mindless monster germs. That contamination left a door open – a two-way door into the Upside Down which has been just hanging out in his head ever since. Over the years, Will Byers just sort of got used to the weight of things – Vecna’s presence, the mind-flayer’s gaze, all the thoughts and feelings that just swirl around in that dark world. But to be honest the real turning point came when he stopped just running from it and instead started really tuning in & listening to what was going on.
Will’s powers aren’t what you’d expect. He’s not just flinging stuff around with his mind like some kind of telekinetic freak. What’s actually going on is that he’s tapped into a broadcast channel – Vecna’s frequency. And Vecna’s been using this frequency from the very start, with all the demogorgons, vines & shadow creatures just being part of the same system. Think of it like a big, living internet – and Will Byers just figured out how to dial in & start speaking the same language
Go back to the end of volume 1 when Will Byers took out those 3 demogorgons – that wasn’t some brute force mind-blowing power display. He basically just sent a kill order straight to the hive-mind & those monsters just shut down dead. It’s not about being strong – it’s about control. Will can basically send orders to the same channel that Vecna does
But it’s not without a cost – every time Will dips into those powers you see him bleeding from the nose. If Will Byers was just borrowing power from this network, his body wouldn’t be breaking down like this. The energy drain, the stress on his nerves – it’s all pointing to something much bigger. He’s not just tapping in to the network, he’s basically merging with it
Will isn’t all-powerful – far from it. His connection to the hive mind depends on how close he is. When he was in California, that connection basically vanished. He couldn’t sense Vecna at all. The second he set foot back in Hawkins, the connection snapped awake. The closer he got to the heart of the Upside Down, the stronger the link felt.
This creates a vulnerability for Volume 2. If Vecna manages to force Will away from Hawkins – if he can separate Will Byers from the hive mind’s epicenter – then Will’s just a regular kid again. No powers. No psychic network. No special edge.
The Two-Way Street Nobody Saw Coming
Here’s where things get darker. Vecna’s hive mind was always meant to be his own personal spy network. But when Will Byers tapped into that system, he accidentally opened it both ways.
Now Will Buyers can see what Vecna sees. He’s been looking through the monsters’ eyes, mapping out Vecna’s plans. But Vecna also knows someone’s in there with him. He can feel Will snooping around. He knows he’s got an intruder in his own head.
So for Volume 2 – Vecna’s going to have a go at slamming that door shut. He might try to sever Will’s lifeline, take control of him, or – in the worst-case scenario – use Will’s own connection against him. Picture Vecna shooting pure torment straight back through that psychic link they share – the very same one that Will uses to nudge those creatures he’s got under his control. Suddenly, Will’s greatest strength becomes his biggest liability.
Will’s powers are inextricably linked to his mental wellbeing. If Vecna can just get inside his head again and make him start doubting himself, then the whole thing falls apart – leaving Will Byers stumbling around in the dark.
Will Byers isn’t a second superhero – he’s a crossroads. He’s the one person who can actually get inside Vecna’s operation, reach into his system from the inside out. And the real plot for Volume 2 is going to be Will trying to get a handle on his powers while simultaneously fighting against the creeping fear that maybe he’s gone too far already. Can he use the collective consciousness of the Upside Down without losing himself in the process? Can he somehow turn that darkness back on Vecna himself?
Here’s the question that’s going to haunt us through the final chapters: Is Will Byers even still fully human? Or has he become something else entirely – a hybrid, wearing the face of a kid but actually channeling the worst excesses of the Upside Down?
