FIR Review: A neat, taut thriller

‘FIR’ is Tamil star Vishnu Vishal’s first Telugu release. The film was released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu in theaters today.

‘FIR’ is a thriller that has a focused approach. Except for a brief love song that is interconnected to the main plot and twist, there are no prolonged love stories or item songs, or mindless action stunts. It gets to the point straight away. The point is identifying a man named Aboobucker Abdullah, who is planning a massive terror attack in India.

The NIA officials get intelligence that a Telugu man named Aboobucker Abdullah secretly working for ISIS is in Vizag. Who is he? As the NIA team is on its mission, Irfan Ahmed comes into the picture.

Irfan Ahmed, (Vishnu Vishal), is a gold medalist in Chemistry from IIT. But he cannot get the deserved position in companies due to his religion. The frustrated young man begins to work in a small pharma company in Vizag until he gets a big job in MNC. He lives with his mother, who is a constable.

As he returns from Hyderabad to Vizag after completing his job work, he loses his mobile phone and misses the flight. In his frustration, he uses an objectionable word at the airport that alerts NIA officials. He is on the radar of NIA now. Can he come out of this situation?

New director Manu Anand’s ‘FIR’ has shades of ‘Vishwaroopam’ and web series ‘The Familyman’, but it manages to provide enough thrills. The film drives in a fast-paced manner. The film cleverly builds up the suspense until the final twist is revealed. The director uses tricks that perfectly mislead the audience.

It has minor issues like derailing the subject at some point, but it is excusable.

As Irfan, Vishnu Vishal delivers a sincere performance. He is convincing in the role. The film has three main female characters played by Manjima Mohan, Raiza Wilson, and Reba Monica John, each one of them have a strong portion. Raiza and Reba play their parts well.

Gautham Menon as National Security advisor provides the aura required. The film has terrific technical output. The new director brings out the best from his technicians.

Bottom-line: Vishnu Vishal starrer ‘FIR’ is a neat and engaging thriller. The film’s twist works well.
