Anaganaga Oka Raju: What’s the story about?

Raju (Naveen Polishetty), the grandson of a once-wealthy landlord, is left with nothing but the reputation of being a rich heir. His grandfather has already given away all their lands to various men and women, leaving Raju broke but hopeful. Determined to escape his financial mess through marriage, he finally zeroes in on Charulatha (Meenakshi Chaudhary), the daughter of another affluent landlord.

After learning about Charulatha’s fondness for pet dogs and Korean dramas, Raju carefully designs a series of plans to impress her. His calculated efforts pay off, love blossoms, and the two get married in quick time.

But on the very first night of their wedding, Raju receives a handwritten letter from his father-in-law Bhupathi Raja (Rao Ramesh), stating that all properties and responsibilities have now been entrusted to him. The catch? Every single asset has already been mortgaged to banks. What will Raju do after this shocking revelation, and how will he handle being cleverly duped?

Analysis

Directed by debutant Maari, “Anaganaga Oka Raju” has its script penned by Chinmayi Ghatraju and Naveen Polishetty. There is nothing particularly new or substantial about the story, but the film is packed with gags.

Naveen Polishetty does what he is best known for—quick repartees, prasa-based humour, and punchy one-liners such as “Guchi… Brandla Pichi” and “Walmart University of Costco.” These lines do generate laughs initially, but when the entire film runs on the same template, the humour gradually begins to feel repetitive and tiresome. As both writer and actor, Naveen once again leans heavily on his familiar strengths.

The result is predictable: a handful of genuinely funny moments, some decent laughs, but an overwhelming sense of déjà vu.

The first half works comfortably due to its simple setup and situational comedy. Naveen Polishetty’s one-man show keeps things engaging, and the interval reveal that Raju has been completely duped lands well and creates intrigue. However, the second half takes an unexpected detour into political campaign territory. While a few scenes click like Raju’s face being printed like a RIP poster while canvassing votes for the ‘Deepam’ symbol, the larger election drama soon turns repetitive and dull.

There is also a glaring lack of logic, with the entire “rendu Telugu rasthralu” seemingly focused on a small village president election, complete with media live coverage. But logic has never been a strong point in Naveen Polishetty’s films, only gags matter here. Unfortunately, due to recycled ideas and the absence of freshness, “Anaganaga Oka Raju” never rises above average despite a steady supply of humorous dialogues.

Naveen Polishetty delivers yet another familiar performance and plays Bhimavaram Raju with ease. Meenakshi Chaudhary does a competent job in her role, while the supporting cast performs as required. Among Mickey Meyer’s songs, only Bhimavaram Balma manages to leave an impression.

Bottom Line

“Anaganaga Oka Raju” offers a few funny one-liners and occasional hilarious moments, but it is weighed down by familiarity and dragging portions. It works as a time-pass entertainer, yet offers nothing new.
