Hidimbha review: Twist is solid, but the narration falls short

Hidimbha

What’s it about?

The disappearance of numerous girls in Hyderabad is at the center of Hidimbha. A special IPS officer from Kerala named Adhya (Nandita Swetha) has been tasked with leading the investigation.

Abhay (Ashwin Babu), who is in charge of the case, is the one she goes to for assistance. They also share a history of romance. As they delve deeper, they learn that the Hidimbha, a clan notorious for eating people, may be connected to the murders.

What does the Hidimbha family, who apparently vanished during the time of the British, have to do with this case?

Analysis

Either a compelling story with nail-biting moments or unexpected twists and turns are necessary for a good thriller. In “Hidimbha,” the notoriously cannibalistic Hidimbha clan is discussed. The period of British rule in history is also referenced. This movie looks good on paper. However, the concepts have not been rendered adequately for the screen.

The film’s first half plays like a standard investigative thriller, but after the intermission, everything changes as the truth about the Hidimbha clan is revealed. Interesting details about Makrand Deshpande’s backstory and the connection between Hidimbha’s past and present are presented interestingly. These segments are engaging to watch because of the excellent sound design. However, the narrative contains numerous inconsistencies. And some images are just too disturbing to take in.

There are also too many cinematic liberties that the film takes for granted. The logic is thrown out the window as well.

Nandita Swetha, in her role as a police officer, gives a decent performance. Ashwin Babu does his job satisfactorily. Makrand Deshpande is the standout performer.

The film’s production design and technical aspects are both excellent. The music, sound effects, and sound editing are the highlights. These departments contribute significantly. The producers spared no expense in ensuring the highest possible technical quality.

Bottom line: “Hidimbha” has a different storyline and has a solid twist. However, everything goes overboard and logic takes a back seat. The film’s narrative falls short.
