Nenu Student Sir review: The central point is neat but…

What’s it about?

Subbu (Bellamkonda Ganesh) is an undergraduate student. His sole obsession is to obtain an iPhone. He does odd jobs to save money for it. He finally purchases an iPhone 12. The next day, two student groups clash at his university, and police take all of the students to the police station and lecture them on proper behaviour. Before providing counselling, the police confiscated all of the students’ phones and placed them in a tray.

Subbu’s phone disappears from the tray, prompting him to approach Commissioner of Police Vasudevan (Samuthirakani) and claim that the local police stole his phone. Vasudevan, irritated, asks him to take one of the station’s recovery mobiles, but Subbu refuses.

In order to get closer to Vasudevan and recover his phone, he befriends the commissioner’s daughter Shruti (Avantika), who also happens to be his college classmate. One thing leads to another, and soon enough Subbu is accused of killing Nayak, a student leader. Is he innocent or was he set up?

Analysis

The premise of Krishna Chaitanya’s “Nenu Student Sir!” is enticing. It explains how scammers steal from abandoned bank accounts. The writer Krishna Chaitanya and the director Rakhi Uppalapati have used elements of a suspense thriller to tell this story in a commercial way, while avoiding the central point by focusing on peripheral details. As a result, the the first half of the film is completely unremarkable. The entire section where the protagonist is fixated on acquiring an iPhone and then losing it is accompanied by dull narration.

It’s common practice for directors to craft an enchanting love story before getting to the meat of the story. The new director, however, does not do this thread justice. He has put all of his eggs in the final episode, which is, of course, a good thing. The final minutes of the film are its strongest. The twists in the end have worked well.

Bellamkonda Ganesh fits in well as a student. He gets his due in the final act of the film. Samuthirakani’s magnetism lends some credibility. Srikanth Iyengar is fine.

Sunil makes a brief cameo. Avantika Dassani, daughter of yesteryear actress Bhagyashri, makes little impression in her debut.

The production values are decent. Technical values are just okay.

Bottom line: The main point of “Nenu Student Sir!” is impressive, but the narration barely passes muster.
