What’s it about?
Vijay (Sree Vishnu), an employee at a private bank, is desperate to shed his ‘single’ status and find a girlfriend. In a bid to impress Poorva (Ketika Sharma), he goes as far as staging a fake rescue scene at a metro station. He hires rowdies and planning to swoop in as the hero, expecting her to witness the act. But things take a turn when it’s not Poorva who sees it, but Harini (Ivana), who gets impressed by Vijay’s ‘heroic’ act and falls for him. She even proposes to him, but Vijay rejects her, as he’s deeply infatuated with Poorva.
Will Poorva, who works at a car showroom, ever reciprocate? Or will he have to reconsider Hairini’s proposal? Caught between two women, Vijay must make a choice. What will he ultimately decide?
Analysis
“#Single,” as suggested by its trailers and promotions, is a film meant for lighthearted entertainment. It aims to provide laughs, and to some extent, it succeeds. Even though the hero is caught between two girls throughout the film, it’s not triangular love story. In fact, there isn’t much of a strong story to begin with. The title “Single” makes sense only at the end of the climax.
The film relies entirely on Sree Vishnu and his comic timing. Apart from playing the lead, he shoulders the film and does his best to keep the audience entertained with his effortless humor and timing.
To evoke laughs, he throws in trending viral content, memes, and mimicked movie dialogues. While these do bring in some chuckles, they also highlight the film’s biggest issue — no solid narrative or emotional depth. This is why the first half works to an extent, but the second half feels tiresome due to repetitive sequences.
The abrupt change in one heroine’s behavior and the forced backstory for the other don’t work convincingly either. The climax, which teases a possible sequel, falls flat. Beyond Sree Vishnu and, to some extent, Vennela Kishore, there’s no solid base.
As mentioned earlier, the entire film rests on Sree Vishnu’s shoulders, and he delivers. Comedy has always been his strength, and he brings some spark. Vennela Kishore contributes decently in a few parts. Ketika Sharma finally gets a role with some performance scope, and she handles it well. Ivana, as the bubbly girl, fits the part comfortably.
On the technical side, Velraj’s cinematography adds some visual appeal.
However, as both writer and director, Caarthik Raju delivers a rather passable effort.
Bottom-line: “#Single” is meant to be a light, time-pass watch, and it does a fair job on that front. Sree Vishnu and Vennela Kishore make the film enjoyable with their performances, while the lack of a strong story and the repetitive nature of some scenes make it feel dull in parts.
