Anushka Shetty: I am currently reading the Mahabharata

Actress Anushka Shetty, who completes 20 years in cinema this year, is all set to return to the big screen with “Ghaati,” an action-adventure directed by Krish and slated for release on September 5. In a recent phone interaction with the media, the actress opened up about her journey, her upcoming role, and even her current reading habit.
On completing 20 years in films and doing Ghati
“It feels very exciting. The character of Sheelavathi in Ghaati is amazing. I have never done such a role before. It has many beautiful shades and took me out of my comfort zone,” Anushka said.
She added that while she has portrayed strong characters in films like Arundhati, Rudramadevi, Baahubali, and Bhagamathie, Sheelavathi stands apart with her unique depth. “Every woman may appear simple and delicate, but when the situation demands, she becomes a strong pillar. That’s the essence of Sheelavathi, and Krish has crafted her beautifully,” she noted.
“When Krish garu and writer Srinivas garu narrated the story, I found the culture they presented very fascinating. After visiting the locations, I was excited because we were bringing an entirely new world to the audience,” she said.

On the ‘ganja’ element in Ghati
Addressing the backdrop of the film, she remarked: “Krish garu always picks socially relevant subjects. Yes, the film touches on the issue of ganja, which is a serious concern in society. While Ghaati is primarily an action-packed commercial entertainer, it also carries a strong and positive message.”
On her personal life and current interests
Beyond cinema, Anushka Shetty shared that she travels extensively and spends a lot of time reading. “Right now, I am reading the Mahabharata,” she revealed with a smile.
When asked if there are any characters she still wishes to explore, Anushka was quick to respond: “I want to do an out-and-out negative character. If a strong role comes my way, I will definitely take it up.”
With “Ghaati,” Anushka Shetty once again steps into a powerful role, promising audiences both entertainment and substance.
