Band Melam Review

What’s Band Melam about?

Set in a Telangana village, “Band Melam” revolves around Giri (Harsh Roshan), who has been in love with his maternal uncle’s daughter Raji (Sridevi Apparalla) since childhood. Their families even envision their marriage at a young age. However, time changes their fortunes. Giri’s family slips into financial hardship and moves to a modest home, while Raji’s father (Sai Kumar) becomes wealthy.

Their personal journeys also diverge. Giri struggles to even pass his tenth class, whereas Raji moves ahead, pursuing engineering. Despite this, Giri remains adamant that Raji is meant to be his and grows increasingly possessive. While she urges him to first clear his exams and then prove himself through his passion for music, he remains a carefree villager, spending his days drinking and idling with friends, who double up as his band members. Occasionally, they perform at local events, but with little seriousness.

The rest of the film follows whether Giri transforms himself, finds success with his music, and makes a mark on YouTube, and what incident triggers this change. Will Raji accept him, or will she choose a more stable future with her classmate?

Analysis

“Band Melam” brings together Harsh Roshan and Sridevi Apparalla, the young pair who impressed audiences in last year’s “Court”. Once again, they play lovers, this time shifting the setting from Andhra to Telangana. However, the similarity ends there.

The core problem lies in its script, which comes across as outright silly. It is baffling how such an outdated and shallow storyline made it past the initial stages, let alone secured production backing. There is neither a fresh idea nor a compelling narrative, nor even a basic emotional connect to hold the viewer’s interest.

The trope of a teenage boy obsessively claiming his maradalu as his future wife is hardly new. It has been explored multiple times in Telugu cinema. But presenting it today without any evolution, depth, or engaging storytelling only highlights how dated the film feels.

Director Sathish Javvaji, who also penned the story, deliver work that feels largely amateurish. Despite its relatively shorter runtime of 140 minutes, the film feels exhausting. In contrast, even a lengthy film like “Dhurandhar The Revenge” was a riveting watch, whereas “Band Melam” often tests the viewer’s patience with its never-ending silliness.

Performance-wise, both leads fail to recreate their earlier charm. While Sridevi Apparalla is passable in a limited role, Harsh Roshan is let down by both characterization and execution. His performance is exaggerated, often delivering a Rs 100 expression for moments that barely require a Rs 10 reaction, resulting in loud, ineffective drama.

For a film centered around a music band aspiring for recognition, the soundtrack should have been a strong pillar. Instead, Vijai Bulganin delivers a disappointingly dull and forgettable album. Beyond a few neat frames, the technical departments offer little to salvage.

Bottom line: “Band Melam” is outright silly. From its weak script to amateurish direction, it lacks depth and engagement. At 140 minutes, it feels like a four-hour drag.
