A legal battle surrounding a popular song remix has taken Bollywood by surprise. A producer has reportedly filed a Rs 400 crore lawsuit over the use of a song from one of his old films in an upcoming movie.

The controversy centers on “Chunnari Chunnari – Let’s Go”, a remix version featured in the forthcoming Hindi film “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai”. The song stars Varun Dhawan alongside actresses Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde and has been gaining traction on YouTube.

The track is based on the iconic 1999 song “Chunnari Chunnari” from the blockbuster “Biwi No.1”, which starred Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen. Interestingly, both the original film and the new movie have been directed by David Dhawan.

However, Vashu Bhagnani, the producer of “Biwi No.1”, has approached the Bombay High Court, filing a Rs 400 crore suit against producers Ramesh Taurani and Kumar S. Taurani, as well as director David Dhawan. Bhagnani alleges that the original song was used without obtaining his permission and claims he was not consulted before the remix was incorporated into the new film.

While copyright disputes over songs are not uncommon, the staggering Rs 400 crore compensation demand has become the talking point in the industry.

“Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” is scheduled for release on June 5, 2026.
