The formula films don’t work. There has to be something different, at least an engaging presentation if not a strong script. This is the message the Telugu audiences have given in recent weeks. After a spate of flops in June and July, the Telugu film box office saw a turnaround of fortunes this month.

The August 5th weekend saw two films becoming hits. Last weekend, multiple Telugu and Hindi films competed at the box office, but the clear winner is the mystery thriller ‘Karthikeya 2’. The film was released on Saturday and faced the problem of finding theaters. Still, it has managed to garner collections both in domestic and overseas.

Karthikeya 2 is a super hit

Starring Nikhil Siddharth and Anupama Parameswaran, ‘Karthikeya 2’ is directed by Chandoo Mondeti. The film collected about Rs 7 Cr in Telugu states in two days. Additionally, 400k plus dollars came from the USA.

Macherla Niyojakavargam is a huge disappointment

On the other hand, Nithiin’s ‘Macherla Niyojakavargam’ tanked after posting strong collections on the first day. Nithiin’s film too brought in openings but the film was rejected due to its formulaic content. It saw poor collections on Saturday and Sunday and ended up being another big flop.

Laal Singh Chaddha flops in Telugu as well

Aamir Khan’s attempt to win the Telugu audiences unfortunately has not worked out. He dubbed ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ in Telugu and promoted the film in Telugu states in a big way. Megastar Chiranjeevi acted as a presenter for the Telugu version. But somehow, the Telugu audiences didn’t show much interest. Naga Chaitanya’s presence also not helped either.

Sita Ramam and Bimbisara hold well

Bimbisara and Sita Ramam

Kalyan Ram’s ‘Bimbisara’ and Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur starrer ‘Sita Ramam’ already became hits. The two movies in their second weekend had a decent run and added more money to their kitty. Both films are money spinners.

At the USA box office, both these movies crossed two milestones. ‘Bimbisara’ grossed half a million dollars, while ‘Sita Ramam’ joined the million-dollar club.
