I prefer doing commercial movies: Sadineni

Pavan Sadineni catered to a particular segment of audience with his debut film ‘Prema Ishq Kaadhal’. But now, the young director aims to expand his horizons. After borrowing the title ‘Savitri’ from D Suresh Babu, Pavan had second thoughts.  But, as luck would have it, he had an ego-less hero in Nara Rohith, who encouraged him to retain the title, regardless of the fact that the title sounds like a female-centric film. In this interview, the director talks about the premise of the film, why he chose Nandita Raj, why he thinks Rohith is the Venkatesh of this generation, and more.

Why did you take so much of gap after ‘Prema Ishq Kaadhal’?  

If I wanted to make a film at a cost of Rs. 2 cr, I would have done it fast. However, after ‘Prema Ishq Kaadhal’, I was looking at something bigger. I wanted to come with a tight product. We completed the film within the planned budget. As you know, this film has a heavy casting. In many scenes, more than 30 artists are seen. We cast experienced actors so that it will be less difficult.

The trailers highlight the heroine’s character. What is her characterization like?

Many films have come that are based on marriage. But this film is refreshing. Savitri was born in a wedding ceremony. So, she likes marriage right from childhood. The film is about what happens when Rishi (Nara Rohith) enters her life.

Didn’t you think that going for this title would be risky?

I didn’t feel that it would be risky. Many might think that it’s a class title, but in my opinion, it’s a mass title. Even the mass audience know yesteryear actress Savitri very well. We felt that with this title the film will have a wider reach.  In fact, it’s because of this title that we have made a good pre-release business. The reason why I chose this title is because it has Telugu-ness in it. Moreover, the story revolves around Savitri.

What is Nara Rohith’s character like?

Rishi likes to change people’s lives for the better. This is the reason why he studies medicine. He can do anything for the girl he loves. The characterization is different from what we saw in his previous films. If ‘Savitri’ is the problem, Rishi is the solution. I think Nara Rohith is like the Venkatesh of the present generation for the reason that he entertains all sections of audience.

Why did you select Nandita Raj for the heroine’s role?

Since the title is ‘Savitri’, we couldn’t have gone for a Mumbai girl. It would do good if it’s a Telugu girl who plays Savitri. She should be a bit idiosyncratic. I found this in Nandita.

What are the major highlights of ‘Savitri’, the film?

It’s entertaining throughout. Emotions that appeal to the family audience are the major highlight.

What are your forthcoming films?
I will do only commercial cinema. I will decide on what film to do after the release of ‘Savitri’.
