Baahubali created this trend, says Prithviraj Sukumaran

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Rajamouli

Prithviraj Sukumaran, a top Malayalam star and director, attributes the popularity of sequels to one man’s vision: SS Rajamouli. Although Indian cinema had seen sequels before the release of “Baahubali,” it wasn’t until the record-breaking success of “Baahubali 2” that the whole Indian film industry began to produce two-parter films.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s “Lucifer,” starring Mohanlal as the protagonist, continues this trend. Megastar Chiranjeevi played the role of “Godfather” in the Telugu remake of the film.

Now, Prithviraj has made a sequel to the film, titled L2: Empuraan. In addition to its original Malayalam language, this sequel will release in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada on March 27, 2025. Sukumaran attributed the tendency of sequels becoming more popular to Rajamouli’s “Baahubali.”

That film, as well as the recent successes of “Pushpa” and “Pushpa 2,” demonstrated that audiences are prepared to invest in multi-part storytelling.

He also said that he will begin working on “Salaar 2” with Prabhas next year. He will play the role of Prabhas’s friend.
