Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, passes away

Famous costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, who won Oscar for her work for Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’, is no more. She passed away today after a prolonged illness at her residence in Mumbai. She was 91. 

She was India’s first Oscar winner.

Born in Kolhapur, Athaiya began her career as a costume designer with Guru Dutt’s ‘C.I.D’. She also worked for more than 100 movies that include classics like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, etc.
