Dhanush’s ‘Kuberaa’ underperforms in Tamilnadu

While Sekhar Kammula’s “Kuberaa” posted an impressive worldwide collection in its first four days, the credit largely goes to the strong performance of the Telugu version. The makers had hoped that the Tamil version would perform on par with, if not better than, the Telugu version. Since Dhanush is one of the leading stars of the Tamil film industry, they had this hope.

However, those expectations fell short. The Tamil version managed to collect only Rs 14 crore (nett) in India over four days, which is significantly lower than anticipated. The rest of the earnings came predominantly from the Telugu version.

Kuberaa’s underperformance in Tamil Nadu has come as a surprise to both Dhanush and the producers. The result has also served as a reality check—pan-Indian Telugu films featuring Tamil stars remain a risky proposition, with the success of the Telugu version continuing to be the deciding factor.

Suriya is currently doing a similar Telugu-Tamil film in the direction of Venky Atluri.
