A reference to legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja in Suriya’s latest film “Karuppu” (“Veerabhadrudu” in Telugu) has now been removed following criticism from fans and social media users.

Ilaiyaraaja has often objected to the use of his songs, name, or references in films without his permission. Reports suggest that the veteran composer was unhappy with a satirical dialogue in the film that indirectly referred to his copyright-related legal stance.

Despite the controversy, “Karuppu” (Veerabhadrudu in Telugu) has emerged as a decent box-office success during its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu.

The issue began after audiences pointed out a scene that appeared to mock Ilaiyaraaja’s strict approach towards copyright protection. The dialogue quickly sparked backlash online, with many fans accusing the makers of disrespecting the legendary composer.

Responding to the criticism, production house Dream Warrior Pictures released an official statement expressing deep respect and admiration for Ilaiyaraaja. The makers clarified that there was no intention to offend or insult him in any manner.

They also confirmed that the controversial dialogue would be removed or modified in future versions of the film currently playing in theatres and in subsequent releases.
