Superstar Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra in Rajamouli’s new epic titled “Varanasi.” Until now, the project had been referred to as SSMB29 or GlobeTrotter, but the official title was announced today at a special event held at Ramoji Film City.
The event, which stretched for several hours, turned rather dull with its old-fashioned format: routine speeches, a dance performance by Shruti Haasan, and forced humor from hosts Suma Kanakala and Ashish Chanchlani. A technical glitch that interrupted the teaser screening for several minutes only added to the frustration.
Once the teaser finally played, it showcased the time period of the story and the various regions the protagonist journeys through, culminating in a striking shot of Mahesh Babu riding a massive Nandi (bull). The title “Varanasi” was then revealed.
The teaser is impressive but not stunning. It just showed the canvas of the film.
Mahesh Babu later made his stage entry riding a mechanical bull, echoing the teaser’s final visual.
In his speech, Rajamouli revealed that the film is being crafted for IMAX GT, a premium large-format experience. He also stated that the story is inspired by a key episode from the Ramayana, and confirmed that Mahesh Babu will appear as Lord Rama in the film.
