Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam, known for effortlessly shifting between intense dramas and breezy romances, is reportedly returning to his comfort zone. He will direct a love story. Historically, the director has bounced back from setbacks with youthful romantic films that resonate with audiences, such as Sakhi (2000) and OK Bangaram (2015).
Following the underwhelming response to his most recent film “Thug Life,” starring Kamal Haasan and Simbu, Mani Ratnam is now said to be scripting a contemporary love story aimed at the current generation.
While the project is still in its early stages, speculation around the casting has already begun. Names like Simbu and Naveen Polishetty are being considered for the male lead, while Rukmini Vasanth is reportedly in talks for the female role. However, given Mani Ratnam’s history of revising his cast until filming begins, the final lineup remains uncertain.
The director has also acknowledged the disappointment around “Thug Life: and, in a rare gesture, expressed regret to the audience. With this new film, he seems ready to reconnect with his core storytelling strengths.
