Nayanthara retains her strong position

Nayanthara, widely regarded as the “Lady Superstar,” has long enjoyed a rare stature in Indian cinema, delivering several blockbuster hits even as a solo lead in Tamil films. However, the past few years saw a noticeable lull in her career.

With fewer releases and no major Tamil projects coming her way, her position slipped a bit. Top Tamil stars did not cast her in their films. Rajinikanth’s Darbar (2020) remained her last big Tamil outing. Although her Bollywood debut Jawan (2023), opposite Shah Rukh Khan, turned out to be a massive blockbuster, it was followed by a relatively dull phase.

Against this backdrop, Nayanthara signed “Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu.” Initially, she was hesitant to come on board, as the makers sought a rebate in her remuneration, leading to prolonged discussions. At one point, this even put her participation in doubt.

Director Anil Ravipudi later revealed that what ultimately convinced her was the strength of the script and the opportunity to share screen space once again with Megastar Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh.“She loved the script and was excited about the film. Though she wanted to drop out at one stage due to remuneration-related technicalities, she finally signed after understanding my honesty. She felt that the role carried dignity and substance,” Ravipudi said.

The decision paid off handsomely. “Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu” emerged as a blockbuster, reaffirming Nayanthara’s star power and proving that her image as a top actress remains firmly intact. The film has now opened doors for more big-ticket projects, especially in Telugu cinema.

While Nayanthara’s high remuneration has often posed budgetary challenges for filmmakers, her current success has once again underlined her market value. For now, she appears set to secure important and prestigious roles in major Telugu films, reinforcing her position at the top.
