‘Nightingale of South India’ legendary singer S. Janaki passes away

Legendary playback singer S. Janaki passed away on Saturday at the age of 88 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mysuru. Her granddaughter, Apsara Vidyula, announced the news through an Instagram post, stating that the veteran singer breathed her last due to age-related health complications.

Fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” S. Janaki enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning over six decades. She recorded more than 50,000 songs across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and several other Indian languages, making her one of the most prolific playback singers in Indian cinema.

Born on April 23, 1938, in Pallapatla village of Repalle mandal in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district, S. Janaki became an inseparable part of South Indian film music. Her soulful voice brought countless timeless melodies to life and earned her immense admiration from generations of music lovers.

During her illustrious career, she won four National Film Awards along with numerous state and film industry honors. In recognition of her exceptional contribution to Indian music, the Government of India conferred upon her the Padma Bhushan in 2013.

From the era of legendary singer Ghantasala to collaborations with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, S. Janaki delivered countless memorable duets and evergreen classics that continue to resonate with audiences.

Among her most celebrated Telugu songs are Sirimalle Puvva (Padaharella Vayasu), Mounamelanoyi (Sagara Sangamam), Venuvai Vachanu (Matrudevobhava), Priyathama Naa Hrudayama (Prema), Abbanee Teeyani Debba (Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari), Ee Duryodhana Dussasana (Pratighatana), Maate Mantramu (Seethakoka Chiluka), and Sundari Neeve (Telugu version of Dalapathi).
