Online harassment: Renu Desai, Anasuya abusers arrested

Online harassment of actresses has reached alarming levels, with trolls increasingly crossing the line from criticism to outright abuse and threats. Many actors today find it difficult to express their opinions on social media without facing a barrage of vulgar comments. Renu Desai and Anasuya Bharadwaj faced such nuisance.
However, authorities are now stepping in with strict action.
In recent developments, Renu Desai and Anasuya Bharadwaj approached cyber crime police, filing complaints against individuals who had been targeting them with abusive and obscene content online.
In Renu Desai’s case, Hyderabad police arrested a man identified as Kotipalli Venkanna for posting vulgar remarks about her on social media.
Similarly, following Anasuya’s complaint, the Cyberabad Cyber Crime Police launched an investigation and gathered technical evidence. They arrested a man named Janardhan, a native of Pulivendula in Andhra Pradesh, last week.
Investigations revealed that the accused had morphed Anasuya’s photos and shared them with obscene captions, allegedly to gain attention and increase engagement on social media platforms.
With both arrests, the police have sent a strong message that online abuse, especially targeting women, will not be tolerated.
