Shankar at crossroads: Flops, legal issues and casting troubles

Director S. Shankar, once regarded as the most powerful filmmaker in South Indian cinema, is currently going through a difficult phase. A series of flops, stalled projects, and legal complications have left the director struggling to move forward with his next film.

Shankar’s recent films have failed to live up to expectations at the box office. Big-budget ventures such as Kamal Haasan starrer “Indian 2” and Ram Charan starrer “Game Changer” ended up as major disappointments, raising serious concerns about his approach of mounting projects on a scale far beyond the market capacity.

The setback of “Indian 2” has also affected the planned sequel, Indian 3. Although the story was originally designed as a two-part saga, the poor performance of the second installment stalled plans to proceed with the third film.

Meanwhile, Dil Raju is still recovering from the financial strain caused by the failure of “Game Changer.” At the same time, Lyca Productions has reportedly moved to court demanding that Shankar complete “Indian 3” before starting any new project.

These developments have made top actors cautious about collaborating with the director. Shankar has been planning a period drama titled “Velpari,” based on the legendary Tamil king. However, finding a suitable star has turned into a major challenge.

Among Tamil actors, options are limited. Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth may not suit such a demanding historical role at this stage of their careers. Vikram does not command a strong pan Indian market currently. Vijay has stepped into politics, while Ajith Kumar may not be ideal for the character in terms of age and appearance. Actors like Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan also do not yet carry the pan Indian pull needed for such a large scale film.

Because of these limitations, Shankar is now looking toward Bollywood. Earlier, he had announced a remake of “Anniyan” with Ranveer Singh, but the project was eventually shelved. After the success of “Dhurandhar,” Ranveer Singh is expected to be more cautious in choosing his next films.

With legal hurdles, financial pressures, and casting challenges all at once, Shankar appears to be at a crucial crossroads in his career as he attempts to mount his next ambitious project.
