Tamannaah says South Indian cinema is more restrictive for actresses

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has opened up about the differences between Bollywood and South Indian cinema, particularly when it comes to opportunities and expectations for female actors.

Speaking in an interview with Forbes India, Tamannaah said the Hindi film industry offers greater flexibility, allowing actresses to choose between performance-oriented roles and mainstream commercial entertainers.

Reflecting on her journey in the South film industry, Tamannaah said she gradually understood why many people describe its portrayal of women as being shaped by a male-centric perspective. She noted that commercial South cinema often places significant emphasis on star appeal, glamour, and screen presence, making it more restrictive for actresses seeking a wider range ofroles.

The actress added that while she eventually understood the South film industry’s requirements, particularly in large-scale commercial films, the space can be limiting compared to Bollywood.
