Telugu Film Industry: Revenue woes persist

The Telugu film industry is often hailed as India’s top-performing cinema hub, with fans and producers proudly proclaiming its dominance over Bollywood. The success of pan-Indian blockbusters such as “Baahubali 2” and “Pushpa 2”—currently ranked as the second and third highest-grossing Indian films of all time—has cemented this narrative in the public imagination.

Yet behind the glitter of these big hits, the industry is facing significant challenges. The first half of 2025 has been underwhelming at the box office. Only three films have managed to strike gold. They are “Sankranthiki Vasthunam,” “Court,” and “Mad Square.” A handful of others, including “Single” and “HIT 3,” recorded average box performances.

Most new releases have struggled to even generate strong opening numbers, leaving theaters grappling with low footfalls. The situation has been further exacerbated by a spate of postponements and scheduling uncertainty, dampening both audience enthusiasm and distributor confidence.

Industry experts say that despite the global stature Telugu films have achieved in recent years, the domestic theatrical market is under considerable strain. “The box office isn’t living up to the hype,” said a veteran distributor. “We need consistent success and more number of releases and a proper planning of movies, not just a few pan-India blockbusters.”

All eyes are now on the upcoming slate of major releases in the second half of the year, including “Hari Hara Veera Mallu,” “Kingdom,” “War 2,” “OG,” “Akhanda 2,” “SYG,”” The Raja Saab,” and “Dacoit.” The performance of these films could determine whether the industry can turn the tide or whether the current revenue slump will persist.
