Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam reunited after three decades for “Thug Life,” marking their first collaboration since the cult classic “Nayakan.” However, unlike their previous success, “Thug Life” was met with harsh reviews from critics and rejection from general audiences.
The film’s poor box office performance reportedly left both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam shocked. In an effort to recover some of the losses, the makers have now agreed to an early digital release. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan co-produced the film.
Prior to its theatrical debut, the team had assured theater exhibitors that the film would not be available for streaming before eight weeks. But in a change of course, they have now given Netflix the green light to begin streaming the film next month.
Netflix had acquired the digital rights for over Rs110 crore.
“Thug Life” features Kamal Haasan as a gangster, with Simbu playing his protégé, Trisha as his lover, and Abhirami as his wife.
