Arijit Singh needs no introduction. Widely regarded as one of India’s most popular and highest-paid singers, he has delivered countless chartbusters and remained at the top of the music industry for over a decade. However, the singer shocked fans on New Year’s Day by announcing his retirement from playback singing.
Taking to Instagram—where he has over 12 million followers—Arijit revealed that he will no longer be accepting new playback assignments, choosing instead to focus on his personal music journey.
In his post, he wrote:
“Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not going to be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
At 38, Arijit Singh rose to nationwide fame with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, which proved to be his breakthrough hit and changed the course of his career.
He also made a strong mark in Telugu cinema, lending his voice to over 20 film songs. His first major Telugu chartbuster was Krishnundi Varasulantha from Swamy Ra Ra. Other popular Telugu songs include Kanulanu Thaake (Manam), Aa Seetadevi Navvula (Rowdy Fellow), Maya (Naa Peru Surya), and Anuvanuvu (Om Bheem Bush).
