The weekend box office delivered a mix of underperformance, nostalgia-driven success and a modest new release. Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati’s “Kaantha” and the remastered classic “Shiva 4K” drew most of the attention, while “Santhana Prapathirasthu” saw minimal traction.
Kaantha shows no weekend growth
“Kaantha” opened on a weak note because of negative word-of-mouth in the Telugu markets. The film held steady through the weekend but did not show any upward trend. It finished with Rs 13.4 Cr India net. Given the large budget and the financial structure involved, the film is expected to end as a loss-making project for producers Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati, even though they secured a decent OTT deal.
Santhana Prapathirasthu fails to take off
The Vikranth and Chandini Chowdary starrer could not attract audiences to theatres. The film recorded extremely low footfalls throughout the weekend.
Shiva 4K remastered Re-release shines
Ram Gopal Varma’s iconic classic “Shiva”, now remastered in 4K, turned out to be the surprise performer of the weekend. The Nagarjuna and Amala starrer received strong response in both Telugu states and in North America. In the US, the film collected 60,000 dollars, placing it among the top ten Telugu re-releases. Worldwide, Shiva 4K grossed more than Rs 3.5 Cr in its opening weekend, which is an impressive achievement for a re-release.
