Bad Boy Karthik review

What’s Bad Boy Karthik about?

Karthik (Naga Shaurya) lives with his sister (Sridevi Vijaykumar), an activist fighting for the poor in Vizag. He falls in love with Maha (Vidhi), the daughter of a police officer (Sai Kumar).

One day, Karthik notices a group of goons attempting to attack his sister and quietly begins investigating the matter. When Maha’s father gets transferred to Kadiri, Karthik follows her under the pretext of love. But his real intention is to track down Govindappa, the man behind the threats to his sister.

Will Karthik succeed in his mission? Why are Govindappa and Varadha Reddy targeting his sister? The rest of the film answers these questions.

Analysis

When you enter a theatre, most films take some time to reveal whether they are engaging or not. But a few films give away their quality within the first few minutes. Directed by Ramesh Desina, Bad Boy Karthik falls into that category.

Formula and clichés are common in Telugu cinema, but this film does not even try to make them engaging. There is not even a single scene that feels fresh or interesting. To put it simply, Bad Boy Karthik is a bad film from start to finish.

The core plot of a brother discovering a threat to his sister and going all out to protect her has been seen in countless films over the years. Even the backstory involving the hero’s father is painfully predictable.

When the story is old, the least a film can do is present it in a more engaging way. Here, there is no such effort.

The love track between Naga Shaurya and Vidhi is dull and lacks chemistry. The portions involving Sai Kumar as a police officer, especially his take on duty, come across as unintentionally silly.

The first half itself feels stretched and boring, and the second half offers no improvement. It moves in a completely predictable manner and ends up being a tedious watch.

Naga Shaurya delivers a routine performance. The character is formulaic and he does nothing to elevate it. Vidhi lacks both screen presence and acting ability. Sai Kumar’s role as a police officer is poorly written and ends up being ineffective.

Sridevi Vijaykumar stands out with a relatively better-written role and brings some seriousness to the film. Mime Gopi and Samuthirakani play typical villain roles. VK Naresh’s role also follows a familiar pattern.

There is not much to highlight on the technical front. Harris Jayaraj returns to Telugu cinema after a long gap, but his music fails to make an impact. The songs are forgettable and do not add value to the film.

Bottom-line: Naga Shaurya starrer “Bad Boy Karthik” ranks among the most boring films in recent times. From beginning to end, it lacks even a hint of freshness and is filled with clichés.
