Jana Nayakudu review: Half Bhagavanth Kesari, Half Thalapathy Kacheri

What’s “Jana Nayakudu” about?
Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (Vijay) raises Vijji (Mamitha Baiju) as his own daughter, determined to fulfill the promise he made to her father before his death—to make her a military officer. However, Vijji suffers from severe fear and has no interest in joining the armed forces. While Thalapathy continues to push her toward his dream, he also discovers that a dangerous gang is chasing her.
He eventually learns that Vijji has become the target of John Himlar’s (Bobby Deol) gang after she unknowingly handed over an important file from a scientist to the Chief Minister. Thalapathy now has two missions: uncover John Himlar’s true identity and real agenda, and help Vijji overcome her fears. At the same time, he wants to inspire people to shed their fear, vote freely, and become responsible citizens. How he accomplishes these missions, the obstacles he faces, and the issues he addresses form the rest of the story.
Analysis
“Jana Nayakudu”, the Telugu-dubbed version of “Jana Nayagan,” marks Vijay’s final film before stepping away from acting to serve as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Vijay and director H. Vinoth appear to have felt that the core theme of Balakrishna starrer Anil Ravipudi’s “Bhagavanth Kesari,” centered on women empowerment, would suit Vijay’s political image. They acquired the remake rights but significantly reworked the material.
However, the film is neither a faithful remake of “Bhagavanth Kesari” nor a full-fledged political drama. While it borrows the emotional foundation of the Telugu blockbuster, the second half shifts into a politically charged narrative clearly designed to strengthen Vijay’s public image ahead of the elections. Unfortunately, with the film releasing after those elections, much of that messaging has lost its intended relevance.
For Telugu audiences, the first half inevitably invites comparisons with “Bhagavanth Kesari,” but this version lacks the emotional depth and conviction of the original. The second half throws in too many ideas involving national security, political manipulation, communal tensions, and patriotism, yet the screenplay never develops them into a gripping narrative.
The film is overloaded with themes. The protagonist is made to tackle everything: from empowering women and rescuing a girl from corrupt politicians to exposing religious polarization, protecting the Constitution, and promoting national unity.
Adding to this, the villain’s plan to turn India’s democracy into a dictatorship by engineering civil unrest stretches credibility beyond limits.
Director H. Vinoth attempts to blend mass entertainment with political commentary, but the screenplay remains uneven and overstuffed.
The film is packed with political symbolism, including references to MGR and indirect commentary on both the DMK and the BJP. These moments might have resonated had the film been released before the elections. At this stage, however, they feel dated and contribute little to the film’s dramatic impact.
As an actor and star, Vijay retains his trademark charisma. Though the role itself is not consistently well-written, he appears in two distinct avatars, delivers politically loaded punch dialogues, and performs his “last dance steps” to entertain his fans. Prakash Raj and Bobby Deol perform their roles adequately as the principal antagonists. Mamitha Baiju’s performance remains ordinary. Pooja Hegde’s role lacks depth, though she looks graceful on screen.
Anirudh Ravichander’s music is largely ordinary. The editing is poor, and it appears several portions were trimmed, possibly due to legal issues. At 182 minutes, the film also feels unnecessarily long.
Bottom-line: Overall, “Jana Nayakudu” is an underwhelming farewell to Vijay’s acting career. Despite the star’s commanding screen presence and charisma, the film suffers from inconsistent emotions and an overloaded screenplay. For Telugu audiences, it offers little entertainment. It may, however, appeal more to Vijay’s loyal Tamil fan base.
