Bengal Tiger – Movie Review

What’s it about?

Akash Narayan (Ravi Teja) is a middle-class guy in a small village in Athreyapuram who does nothing other than chilling out with his friends. His parents arrange an alliance for him but the girl (Aksha) rejects him saying she wants the groom to be a famous personality. To appear in the media, he throws a stone at a minister and gets arrested. When he reveals his real motto, the minister hires him as an assistant. Soon he gets hired by another minister (Rao Ramesh) to be the bodyguard of the minister’s daughter Sraddha (Rashi Khanna). She gets engaged to another person but she starts falling in love with Akash as his every act impresses her. One fine day, she calls off her engagement and requests her father to marry her with Akash. Twist in the tale is that Akash is in love with another girl. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

Director Sampath Nandi has created a mark of his own with Ram Charan starrer Rachcha – making movies with typical mass elements with full dose of glamour show by the lead heroine. In Bengal Tiger too, he has repeated the same style the difference here is that he has doubled the glamour show by adding two heroines in the story and making them being eye-candy. The rich visuals and fun comedy by Prudhvi and Posani is another difference. 

Apart from Rachcha, the movie also reminds us of Ravi Teja’s old movies like Bhageeratha, indeed the raison d’être for the character of Ravi Teja in second half is exactly the same. But unlike Rachcha and Bhageeratha, the first half of Bengal Tiger offer lots of entertainment in the form of Prudhvi’s Future Star episode and Ravi Teja’s antics as well as enough glam show by Rashi Khanna.

We are reminded of energetic Ravi Teja’s old entertainers in the first half. Despite not much story happening during this time, we get entertained perfectly. That is what works in favour of this film. Also Ravi Teja is back in his elements. Though he is still lean, he has looked better in the movie unlike his earlier movie Kick 2.

To entice the core audiences of Ravi Teja, the director has included full of glamour show by the heroines.

The film goes off mark after sometime during the interval. The last act is completely clichéd. Also the entire second half seems entirely different to the first half of the movie. Climax sequence is ditto what we had seen in climax of Rachcha.

Ravi Teja on his part has done his best with his energetic entertaining act. There is too much of digital-correction of his face though, which is visible. Bollywood’s popular actor Boman Irani is given a regular villain’s role but he has added his touch to the character with his graceful performance. Like said already, both the heroines have indulged in lots of skin show. Apart from being glam dolls, they have not much to do in the film.

Other than Ravi Teja, the one who steals the show is Prudhvi. As a guy who is crazy to become a movie star, he brings the house down. His spoof about Attarintiki Daaredi‘s climax sequence is hilarious to the core. Posani although gets repeated has also generated some good laughs in the role of unmarried panthulu. Brahmi as journalist doesn’t create any impact.

Rao Ramesh mouthing dialogue in Rayalaseema accent makes impression. Rest of the cast is okay.

Visually the film is rich to look at, thanks to cameraman S Sounder Rajan. Like in most of the recent movies, perfect editing is lacking. The movie has excessive runtime for a simple storyline. Music by Bheems is okay.

As writer and director Sampath Nandi has improved much and has shown his mark that he can pull off mass entertainers. Some of his dialogues are also good.

Bottom-line: Compared to recent Ravi Teja’s movie, Bengal Tiger is more entertaining. The first half of the movie, Ravi Teja’s antics, and Prudhvi are its strength. Second half should have been better. A regular mass entertainer with severe stress on comedy and glamour show is what Bengal Tiger is all about.
