Bhanumathi and Ramakrishna

30-year-old Bhanumathi (Salony Luthra) is working in a senior position in a corporate company in Hyderabad. Her boyfriend broke up with her. She pretends that she’d moved on from this relationship. In comes into her life and office is Ramakrishna (Naveen Chandra) from Tenali. He is 33, also facing the problem of finding alliances. Ramakrishna is attached as an assistant to her in the office. Do the opposites attract?

Analysis

‘Bhanumathi & Ramakrishna’ is the latest addition to the list of urban Telugu rom-com such as ‘Pelli Choopulu’. Focusing primarily on the two characters and their confusions and love, ‘Bhanumathi & Ramakrishna’, however, narrates the story from the point of view of the heroine.

Contrary to the filmy tradition, here the female protagonist takes a journey to get united with the lover. “Ee Journey ekkadiki teesukelthundo telusu, kaani etu teeesukltundotelidu..Life lo asalu dramane vaddanukunnanu…kani Love antene by default drama tho vastundi,” says the heroine narrating her story, in a middle of her journey to meet ‘him’.

She is not our quintessential Telugu film heroine. She is Bhanumathi, who is 30 and just had a breakup, is going through mood swings due to this. And ‘he’ is ‘Tenali’ Ramakrishna, the small-town guy. He is 33, gets rejected by marriage alliances, can’t speak English fluently. Good-guy but with ‘townie’ inhibitions. He joins as her assistant. Since both of them have met with each other at a juncture in their lives that needed a ‘partner’, they hit off well. The love blossoms slowly like a marigold.

The director takes plenty of time to get into the groove of the main point – Bhanumathi and Ramakrishna meeting and exploring each other, but once we reach the point, he ensures we don’t think anything else but to travel with them.

Perhaps, this is the first time that a Telugu film includes a scene where heroine calls up her gynecologist to seek medicine to prolong her ‘period’ to have a peaceful meeting with her clients. There is also a scene where her father offers a drink to her.

On the downside, the film’s later portions are not that convincing especially the hurried climax. Also, after the second act, the movie looks it has run out of the steam.

The story centers around Salony Luthra, who debuted in Telugu in this film. Salony not only looks apt for the role of Bhanumathi, but she also gives a mature performance. Naveen Chandra as a guy from a small town is as likable as his good nature. Naveen Chandra gives an endearing act. He excels in a scene with his sister and in the climax portions. Viva Harsha gets the best dialogues.

The film also a decent technical output. The cameraman captures the mood well to this low-budgeted movie. I found the background score is uneven, elevating the mood at places, over-the-top at other places.

The debutant director Srikanth Nagothi is a talent to look out for. He has shown his strength in narrating a simple story in a straightforward manner.

Bottom-line: ‘Bhanumathi Ramakrishna’ is a feel-good urban romantic drama. Romance and conversations are natural and it makes a pleasant watch. There’s a dialogue in the film, ‘Happiness Anedi Andariki Okate Kadu…Okkokkariki Okati’. Likewise, not everyone may connect with his but those do will like it more.
