Chaari 111 review: Not quite funny!

Chari 111

What’s it about?

An elite intelligence group known as Rudra Netra, which can function outside of government without adhering to any laws, was formed by former military officer Prasada Rao (Murali Sharma) on the orders of Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister. 15 years after its establishment, Hyderabad is startled by a bomb explosion in a shopping mall, where one person detonates as a bomb.

The new chief minister (Rahul Ravindran) instructs Prasad Rao to promptly designate an agent to investigate the process by which an individual is being converted into a human bomb. He assigns Agent Chaari (Vennela Kishore), knowing fully well that Chaari completes every assignment with the utmost carelessness.

As a backup plan, he also assigns Agent Eesha (Samyuktha Vishwanathan), and together they focus on a businessman named Brahmaji who may be connected to the bomb blasts.

Will Chaari 111 and his agent Eesha successfully solve the case?

Analysis

Director TG Keerthi Kumar, who made his debut with “Malli Modalaindi,” starts “Chaari 111” with acknowledging the creators of the “Mr. Bean” movies and “Johnny English” franchise for inspiring him.

The concept of making a satire or parody of spy thrillers with popular comedian Vennela Kishore in the lead role is an interesting idea. If executed effectively, “Chari 111” had the potential to be a terrific entertainer. Even though Keerthi Kumar was greatly influenced by “Johnny English,” his writing lacks the hilarity necessary for a parody.

The hero’s absurd behavior required more meticulous consideration in both script and execution. Vennela Kishore’s childlike acts, similar to those in “Mr. Bean,” do not evoke much amusement. Even the spoof of espionage movies, such as Samyuktha Vishwanathan in her thigh-slit dress doing action sequences, fails to generate much excitement.

The concept of “Chaari 111” is promising but falls short due to poor writing and ineffective narration.

Coming to performances, Vennela Kishore leads the pack. He does provide some comedy with his tongue in cheek English dialogues. He is funny at many places. The swimming fool scene with actress Samyuktha Vishwanathan is one such example. Samyuktha Vishwanathan in her maiden Telugu work is impressive.

Taagubothu Ramesh as Bunty and Satya as Rahul, both performing Vennela Kishore’s assistants, also generate some laughs. Murali Sharma as the boss is okay.

The technical and production values are decent enough for this spy parody.

Bottom line: As a concept, “Chaari 111″—in which Vennela Kishore plays a humorous agent—sounds interesting, and at first, it even provides some decent comedy. However, the film eventually falls flat as the story unfolds.
