Mr.Majnu – Movie Review

What’s it about!

Vikram Krishna aka Vikky (Akhil) who is introduced as ‘chick magnet’ in London meets Nikitha aka Nikky on a flight journey to India. He is returning to India after completing studies. She is here to attend his brother’s marriage. It turns out be she’s sister of the guy who will be marrying Vikky’s cousin. After initial hiccups, both hit off well, and it is Nikitha who proposes to him. They come to an agreement of two-month period of secret love before telling everyone but that leads to break-up as she is over acting in expressing everything and he gets suffocated by it. Hurt Nikky breaks up and heads to London. What happens is anybody’s guess.

Analysis

‘Boys will be boys’ proudly proclaims the posters of ‘Mr. Majnu’ hinting about characterization of the protagonist, Vikky, played by Akhil, who charms the girls, and who has sort of commitment phobia. The longest relationship he has had with a girl is a month’s time, Vikky tells Nikky, the role is played by ‘Savyasachi’ fame Nidhi Agerwal, when she proposes him.

Despite hating him initially for being ‘chick magnet’, she proposes him as she sees his true side of good-guy who does anything for family (this reminds the track of Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika in ‘Geetha Govindam’). However, the film shifts its tone later and its core conflict point heads in other direction making the film turning too predictable after a while.

A skirt-chaser falling for a girl who is quite opposite to him is not new. Director Venky Aturi made debut with musical hit ‘Tholi Prema’ last year and his sophomore effort ‘Mr. Majnu’ treads the familiar plot path. Venky Atluri with the help of his co-writer has written scenes that are too familiar, that were seen in many movies. Freshness takes a beating, predictability sets in by intermission. Post-interval, it goes down further. Weak story and predictable screenplay is its main drawback.

Compared to his earlier two movies, Akhil Akkineni seems more comfortable with the role he has done here, perhaps it is relatable to his age. He bares his 8-pack abs to impress the girl audiences. Nidhi Agerwal as Nikki puts up a neat act. Priyadarshi as Akhil’s buddy, Naga Babu and Rao Ramesh in their regular style of roles are worth mentioning among the huge cast. Hyper Adhi’s role is clichéd, his jokes work to an extent though.

Thaman’s soundtrack is mixed bag but it is one aspect that should have been better in this film. George’s glossy visuals and uncompromising production values have made the film look rich.

Writer and director Venky Atluri disappoints with regular story, weak narration.

Bottom-line: ‘Mr. Majnu’ lacks both freshness and engaging narration in this rom-com that deals about a chick magnet finding true love in a simple girl.
