After the disappointing performances of Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu and Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom—both of which opened strongly but quickly lost steam—the Telugu film trade looked to August 2025 with high hopes. With two superstars, NTR and Rajinikanth, hitting the screens, the month seemed promising at the outset. But by the end, it turned into a washout with heavy losses across the board.

War 2 suffers heavy losses, Coolie fizzles out

NTR’s Bollywood debut War 2 and Rajinikanth’s Coolie clashed at the box office on August 14. Both films opened to packed houses, and their day-one collections raised hopes of big profits. However, “War 2” was crippled by negative word-of-mouth and relentless online trolling, collapsing almost immediately.

Coolie initially looked like it could emerge as a blockbuster, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where it dominated for the first three days. But the momentum vanished within four days, leaving buyers in losses. In the end, War 2 lost over Rs 40 crore, while Coolie suffered a smaller but still significant Rs 8 crore loss.

Paradha is a complete washout

Anupama Parameswaran’s female-centric Paradha turned out to be a disaster. Despite paid premieres two days before release, the film was panned by audiences and saw dismal turnout even on day one. While the makers comforted themselves with a few “positive reviews from national media,” the film was utterly rejected by the public.

Sundarakanda a non-starter

Nara Rohith’s comeback vehicle Sundarakanda was considered a step up from his recent outings, with its central twist gaining some appreciation. Yet, the film failed to attract audiences to theaters and ended up a non-starter commercially.

Small and Dubbed films bite the dust

Dubbed films like Sir Madam, Su from So, and Tribanadhari Barbarik went unnoticed despite promotional efforts. Similarly, small-budget local releases failed to register any impact. They are: Bakasura Restaurant, Meghalu Cheppina Prema Katha, and Arjun Chakravarthy.

Dulquer Salmaan’s production “Kotha Lokah” managed to earn rave reviews, but its true box office fate will only be known after sustaining for a week.

Overall, August 2025 brought little cheer to the Telugu film industry. With multiple biggies crashing and small films failing to take off, the month ended as one of the weakest periods in recent times for box office performance.
