Telugu Cinema Q1 2026: The first quarter of 2026 has come to a close, and the performance of Telugu cinema paints a disappointing picture. While January offered some hope, February and March struggled badly, delivering a series of flops with barely any notable successes.
Here’s a detailed month-wise breakdown.
January 2026: Sankranti saves the industry
The year began on a poor note with Psych Siddharth’s film opening to disastrous reviews and failing at the box office. Other releases like Vanaveera, 45, and Gulabi also failed to make any impact.
However, the Sankranti festival revived the industry.
Prabhas-starrer “The Raja Saab” entered the festive race with massive hype but ended up as a huge disappointment. Directed by Maruthi, the film faced heavy trolling and resulted in significant financial losses.
In contrast, “Mana Shankaravaraprasad Garu,” starring Chiranjeevi and directed by Anil Ravipudi, emerged as the biggest winner of the season. The film’s strong entertainment quotient made it a massive blockbuster.
“Anaganaga Oka Raju,” featuring Naveen Polishetty, also performed on a decent note and added some cheer to the box office.
Ravi Teja’s “Bhartha Mahashayulaku Vignapthi” failed to click, while Sharwanand’s “Nari Nari Naduma Murari” managed an average run. Towards the end of the month, “Om Shanti Shanti Shanti,” starring Tharun Bhascker and Eesha Rebba, along with a few small films, failed to attract audiences.
February 2026: A complete washout
February turned out to be one of the weakest months in recent times, with not a single clean hit. Gunasekhar’s “Euphoria” received positive reviews but couldn’t translate them into box office success. Vishwak Sen’s “funky” entertainer ended up as a flop, while Santosh Shobhan’s “couple-friendly” film performed slightly better than expected but still fell short of hit status.
Seethapayanam, directed by Arjun and featuring his daughter, also failed. Films like “Hey Balavant” and “Nawab Café” continued the losing streak. Even Sree Vishnu’s Vishnu Vinyasam couldn’t survive at the box office. Despite nearly 20 releases, February did not produce a single successful film.
March 2026: No revival
March followed the same disappointing trend. The first week alone saw around 10 small-budget films releasing simultaneously, none of which made an impact. Mruthyunjaya, starring Sree Vishnu, failed to perform despite some attention.
Saraswathi, featuring Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in multiple roles, and Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani, starring Shivaji and Laya, both ended up as flops.
Pawan Kalyan’s “Ustaad Bhagat Singh,” directed by Harish Shankar and released during Ugadi, opened to mixed reviews and failed to sustain, eventually becoming a major flop.
Late releases like Youth, Band Melam, and Happy Raj also bombed without a trace.
The only film that showed some box office strength in March was “Dhurandhar 2,” a dubbed film starring Ranveer Singh.
Q1 2026 Verdict: Just one clear winner
Overall, the first quarter highlights a worrying trend for Telugu cinema, with only a handful of films making any impact.
