Despite the growing market for Telugu films in North America, the industry saw only four successful releases in the first quarter of 2025. Out of more than 20 films that made it to the US, only a handful turned profitable for both distributors and producers.
Comedy films dominated the Box Office
The biggest hit of the quarter was “Sankranthiki Vasthunam,” starring Venkatesh and directed by Anil Ravipudi. The film emerged as the highest-grossing North American release of Venkatesh’s career, raking in an impressive $3 million. Strong word-of-mouth and its entertainment factor contributed significantly to its success, delivering substantial profits for the distributor.
Another notable success was “Mad Square,” which recently completed its opening weekend and has at least two more strong weeks ahead. The film has already grossed $1 million and is expected to surpass $1.5 million by the end of its theatrical run. A pure comedy with no logic—just non-stop laughs—”Mad Square” struck a chord with audiences.
These films struggled to make an impact
Several high-profile films, including “Game Changer,” “Thandel,” and “Robinhood,” failed to perform at the North American box office, leading to significant losses for their distributors.
Ram Charan’s “Game Changer” was a disaster everywhere, and its North American performance was no exception. However, the bigger surprise was “Thandel,” which fared relatively well in India but failed to cross even the $1 million mark in the US. In contrast, the small-budget courtroom drama “Court” managed to hit $1 million, further highlighting Thandel’s underperformance despite decent reviews.
As the Telugu film industry moves into the summer season, it remains to be seen whether upcoming releases can reverse this trend and deliver more box-office successes in North America.
