Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is reportedly reconsidering her plans as a filmmaker after the disappointing response to her directorial debut “Saraswathi.”
The film, which she produced along with her sister, failed to impress both critics and audiences. Trade reports say the movie struggled at the box office and did not bring the recognition she had hoped for as a director.
Sources say Varalaxmi herself was aware that the second half of the film lacked strength. While the core idea of the story was considered interesting, the narration reportedly did not translate well on screen.
The situation reportedly became more uncomfortable when the film’s original writer Sai Madhav Burra made critical remarks about the project after its release. Considering that Varalaxmi’s family members, including her husband, actively promoted the film, the team had expected at least a better reception.

With the film failing to make an impact, industry buzz suggests that Varalaxmi may shift her focus back to acting, where she has already built a strong presence across multiple South Indian languages. She is likely to take up direction again only if she develops a story idea that truly excites her.
