Everyone is talking about “Peddi”. The entire industry, including producers and trade circles, has recently been saying that all eyes are on “Peddi” to end the prolonged box-office drought and infuse fresh energy into the Telugu film industry.

The general perception is that the film carries tremendous hype and that Telugu audiences are eagerly waiting for it. The film, reportedly mounted on a budget of nearly Rs 300 crore, has already secured a strong OTT deal, while its theatrical business in the Telugu states is said to be quite impressive. But is the hype truly organic and as massive as it appears?

Although director Buchi Babu Sana has made only one film so far, the PR machinery around “Peddi” has carefully and consistently built buzz right from the day of its launch. The campaign has been so effective that many people seem to have moved past Ram Charan’s recent setbacks and started viewing Buchi Babu as one of the industry’s top directors, even though he is yet to fully reach that stature. Strategic publicity, well-cut video glimpses, and the songs released so far have all contributed to creating a steady wave of hype around the film.

Still, it may be premature to assume that the film is headed for record or near-record openings. The most crucial phase for any big-ticket film lies in the final ten days before release, when anticipation must translate into aggressive ticket sales. The team has now unveiled an elaborate multi-city promotional tour, and it remains to be seen how effectively they can elevate the excitement further and convert the curiosity into massive theatrical footfalls.

What are the industry’s expectations?

After the Sankranthi 2026 releases, not a single Telugu film has emerged as a major blockbuster over the last five months. Naturally, the entire industry is pinning its hopes on “Peddi” to emerge as the much-needed money-spinner and bring an end to this dull phase.

“Peddi” is a sports drama blended with action and a social message, with Ram Charan playing a multi-sport athlete. However, he predominantly appears as a wrestler, and the story largely revolves around a wrestling champion. In a recent interview, production designer Avinash Kolla revealed that the team constructed several elaborate sets and consciously ensured that the visual presentation would not resemble the Bollywood blockbuster “Dangal”, which also revolved around wrestling.
