The first month of 2023 has concluded. The year started off well for the Telugu film industry. In January 2023, a half-dozen notable films were released in theatres. The highest grossing film was ‘Waltair Veerayya,’ starring Megastar Chiranjeevi.
Despite having low expectations prior to its release, the entertainer proved to be the audience’s first choice. ‘Waltair Veerayya,’ directed by Bobby, grossed approximately Rs 130 crore (share) worldwide, becoming Chiranjeevi’s highest grossing film. It is also one of Tollywood’s biggest blockbusters.
On the other hand, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s ‘Veera Simha Reddy,’ which arrived in theatres with much fanfare, was unable to capitalise on the solid openings. It began with a bang, but collections slowed after the initial excitement. The film’s prospects were harmed by its excessive violence and unconvincing second half. Despite this, it became the highest grossing film in Balakrishna’s career, surpassing the collections of ‘Akhanda’. The movie is a hit.
The dubbed films ‘Vaarasudu’ (average grosser) and ‘Tegimpu’ failed to make an impression.
Small and medium-budget films such as ‘Kalyanam Kamaneeyam’ and ‘Hunt’ were also released during the month, but they failed to attract audiences.
The month ended with the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Pathaan’ performing well in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The film starring Shah Rukh Khan was also released in Telugu.
