The Padma Awards for 2022 were announced today on the eve of Republic Day (Jan 26). Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki will receive the Padma Shri award for her contribution to the film world. She is the only notable film actor from South India to receive the Padma award this year.
Born as Sankaramanchi Janaki in 1931 in Rajamundry in Andhra Pradesh, she became popular as Sowcar Janaki after her breakthrough film “Shavukaru” in 1950.
She has acted in more than 400 films in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada languages. Her sister Krishna Kumari was also a famous actress.
Rojulu Marayi, Kanyasulkam, Panduranga Mahatyam, Jayam Manade, Dr. Chakravarthi, Akkachellelu, Badipantulu, Tayaramma Bangarayya, etc were some of her notable Telugu films. The veteran actress also appeared in recent Telugu films such as ‘Kanche’ and ‘Babu Bangaram’.
