Vijay’s swearing-in as CM delayed amid numbers game

Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu appears to have hit a roadblock, as his party is still short of the required majority mark.

Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured 108 seats in the Assembly elections. Although the Congress party, which won five seats, has extended support, TVK still falls short of the 118-seat majority mark needed to form the government.

As a result, Governor RV Arlekar is said to have asked Vijay to submit letters of support from at least 118 legislators before proceeding with the swearing-in process.

Majority needed: 118 MLAs
TVK seats won: 108
Support from Congress: 5 MLAs
Still short by: 5 MLAs

Following the uncertainty, security arrangements made outside Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, were withdrawn. Metal detector gates installed at the premises have been removed, and police personnel deployed there have also left.

The political drama is expected to continue for some more time as Vijay and his party leaders reportedly hold discussions with smaller parties to gather the additional support needed to form the government.
