Dude

What’s it about?

Gagan (Pradeep Ranganathan) is heartbroken when his girlfriend (Neha Shetty) breaks up with him and marries someone else. Around the same time, his maradalu Kundana (Mamitha Baiju) proposes to him and asks him to marry her. He rejects her, saying he has never seen her in a romantic way. Hurt by his response, Kundana moves on and finds love with another man quickly, planning to marry him.

Just then, Gagan realises his feelings for her and proposes. But by then, she is already committed to someone else.

Kundana’s father disapproves of her boyfriend because he belongs to another caste and forcibly marries her to Gagan. Now, Kundana and her boyfriend request Gagan to help them escape to a distant place and marry her and divorce her after a month. However, their plan goes off track, leading to further complications.

Will Gagan eventually divorce her and reunite the lovers?

Analysis

“Dude”, starring Pradeep Ranganathan and directed by debutant Keerthiswaran, opens on a refreshing note. Instead of the typical youthful romance setup, the film begins with heartbreak — the protagonist is dumped without an explanation, only to soon face another unconventional twist when he himself rejects a proposal from his maradalu. These early episodes establish that this is not your regular boy-meets-girl tale, and the new director sets up the drama quite smartly.

However, the real fun begins a little later. A prank-like sequence involving Sarath Kumar completely flips expectations. His sudden revelation is both shocking and hilarious, and this one scene becomes the catalyst that forces Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju’s characters into marriage, even though she is in love with someone else. What follows is Pradeep’s desperate attempt to “prove his love” by going to absurd lengths, including marrying only to later divorce her, so she can reunite with her boyfriend.

The writing in these portions is engaging, and the humor lands well. Keerthiswaran excels in building these setups, and Pradeep Ranganathan’s performance elevates the material further. His effortless comic timing carries the entire pre-interval stretch, and the interval bang works effectively.

But the film completely derails post-intermission.

The second half is riddled with illogical situations, forced drama, and even cringe-worthy sequences. What started as a quirky and fun ride turns into a melodramatic stretch filled with contrived messaging about honour killing and respect towards women. While the intention is noble, the execution lacks conviction.

Pradeep Ranganathan once again shoulders the film with his natural charm and screen presence, though he seems slightly stuck in the “dishevelled lover boy” template post. Still, he manages to carry even poorly written scenes with his energy. Mamitha Baiju is impressive, both in emotional and light-hearted moments, and her chemistry with Pradeep works well. Sarath Kumar is a surprise package with a delightfully quirky character. Neha Shetty and Satya appear in brief cameos.

On the technical front, debutant music director Sai Abhayyankar delivers two catchy tracks that work well on screen, though the overall score doesn’t quite live up to the pre-release hype.

Bottom-line: “Dude” is partly fun, partly underwhelming. It starts off as a highly engaging entertainer with genuine freshness, but loses its way in the second half. Pradeep Ranganathan’s presence and a fun-filled first half save the film to an extent, making it a passable one-time watch.
