Superstar Rajinikanth’s “Coolie” created history in Tamil cinema by registering the biggest-ever opening day, surpassing Vijay’s Leo. According to producers, the film grossed ₹151 crore worldwide on Day 1.
Even if one sets aside the producer’s claims, the opening numbers were undeniably massive. However, the film faced severe trolling from Tamil audiences and cinephiles, with many pointing out Lokesh Kanagaraj’s weak writing and glaring plot holes. As a result, the initial euphoria dipped after Day 1.
Despite this, “Coolie” managed to deliver strong numbers on Day 2.
In the Telugu states alone, the film grossed over ₹15 crore. This is a remarkable achievement for a dubbed release. The Independence Day holiday further boosted collections. Overall, Coolie has raked in ₹118 crore in India, while its worldwide tally has crossed the ₹200 crore mark.
