Chandoo Mondeti directed and Bunny Vasu produced the highly anticipated film “Thandel,” starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi. Naga Chaitanya spoke about the film in this interview, ahead of its February 7th release. Excerpts…
Budget and expectations
“Thandel” is massive in all aspects, from vision to execution, and it required a huge budget. It is the most expensive film I have ever acted in, as well as the most physically demanding. I watched the film and am completely confident in its success. The second half contains universal elements, and the climax part delivers an emotional high. Devi Sri Prasad’s Bujji Thalli song went viral, but in the film, his complete soundtrack and background score transport the audience on an emotional journey. I am completely convinced that the film will exceed all expectations.
Initial impression of the story
While working on the web series “Dootha,” I learned about the idea of fishermen landing in a Pakistani jail and their fight. When I initially heard the story, it felt like a documentary. I told Chandoo Mondeti to contact me after he had completed the writing, and I must say that I was really pleased with his interpretation of this basic idea, which included all of the cinematic and emotional components.
Homework
I portrayed Thandel Raju, a leader of the fisherman. Before committing to the film, I wanted to understand the environment and lifestyles of the fishermen in the Uttarandhra region, so I traveled there and visited many of them. Following our meeting, I was determined to take up the film. To effectively adapt to the character, one must first grasp their lifestyle. After doing my homework, I was confident that I could handle the part. Thus, the journey began.
This film allowed me to further my career as an actor. I was trained in the Srikakulam dialect, which was tough to pull off but I did it with after lot of hardwork.
Collaborating with Chandoo Mondeti
I have always wanted to make films based on true stories. I have a preference for grounded narratives. I have a terrific rapport with Chandoo Mondeti. This is my third film with him. He attempts to depict me in a fresh light in each film. He tried hard to tell this story in an engaging manner. “Tandel” is a basically love story, and as you all know, Chandoo Mondeti excels at presenting love stories.

Chemistry with Sai Pallavi
Sai Pallavi is an excellent performer. She has a natural ability to express herself in various ways. I enjoy acting with Pallavi. She exudes pleasant energy. She has a profound understanding of the characters that she plays. My pairing with her in Sekhar Kammula’s “Love Story” was a huge success. When one works with a positive and talented actress like Sai Pallavi, the performances of co-stars improve.
