April 2023 box office: One hit, many disasters

Multiple releases were made during the month of April in the second quarter of 2023. Ravi Teja’s “Ravanasura,” “Meter,” “Shaakuntalam,” “Virupaksha,” and “Agent” were among the notable films released this month.

While Nani’s “Dasara,” which debuted on March 30, maintained its dominance in the first week of April, the first big releases this month were Ravi Teja and Kiran Abbavaram’s films, both of which debuted on April 7.

Ravi Teja’s crime thriller “Ravanasura” bombed like anything. The result shocked the industry because the openings were too low, and there was no subsequent growth. The other flop was “Meter,” which received the lowest ratings and ruined Kiran Abbavaram’s career.

“Shaakuntalam” was Dil Raju’s most expensive failure, as he co-produced the film. Samantha’s mythological drama was released on April 14. It was billed as the next big pan-Indian film. However, it was rejected by the audience on the first day. Dil Raju, the film’s co-producer, suffered a loss of approximately Rs 20 crore. It was directed by Gunasekhar and received the lowest ratings from critics.

“Virupaksha” was released in the third week. The thriller, starring Sai Dharam Tej, was a surprise blockbuster. It had a slow start on the first day, but it picked up steam on the second day and is still running impressively in its second weekend. In the United States, the film is expected to gross more than $1.5 million.

Another major disaster in the form of “Agent” occurred in the last week of April. It is struggling to post collections in its first weekend itself. Starring Akhil Akkineni and directed by Surender Reddy, “Agent” is another big disaster.

Among the notable dubbed films were “Rudrudu”, “Vidudala 1”, and “Ponniyan Selvan 2”. While “Rudrudu” was a flop, the other two films received positive reviews.
