“Baahubali: The Epic”, the re-edited and combined version of the two Baahubali films, hit theaters last week amid considerable social media buzz. However, the response has been mixed.
While some critics were moved by nostalgia, majority of them found the condensed version underwhelming, noting that it offered no new scenes or technical enhancements beyond upgraded sound.
The general audience, however, largely stayed away. Instead of marketing it as a re-release, the team positioned it as a fresh film with a new title, combining both parts into a 225-minute cut. This is a move that seems to have backfired.
Despite the pre-release hype and Rajamouli’s massive brand value, the film’s box office performance has been modest. By the end of its first week, “Baahubali: The Epic” collected a net of Rs 30 crore in India and a worldwide gross of Rs 46 crore, a disappointing figure given the film’s legendary box office status.
